18 Republicans Join Democrats to Advance Ukraine Aid Package Despite Trump Opposition
The House of Representatives passed the Ukraine Support Act on Thursday, approving more than $1 billion in aid for Ukraine, billions more in loans, and new sanctions targeting Russia’s economy.
The bill cleared the chamber 226-195 after 18 Republicans joined Democrats, delivering one of the most significant breaks yet between congressional Republicans and President Donald Trump on foreign policy. Supporters used a successful discharge petition to force the legislation onto the House floor despite opposition from GOP leadership.

Backers argue the package would strengthen Ukraine’s position against Russia and demonstrate continued bipartisan support for Kyiv. Opponents contend the legislation could interfere with diplomatic efforts and limit presidential flexibility.
The vote comes as Russia’s war against Ukraine continues into its fifth year and follows another recent House vote in which some Republicans broke with Trump on foreign-policy issues. The measure now heads to the Senate, where its future remains uncertain, and Trump is expected to oppose it if it reaches his desk.
