21-Year-Old Protester Permanently Blinded After Federal Agent Shoots Him in Face at Santa Ana Anti-ICE Protest
A 21-year-old protester in Santa Ana, California says he is permanently blind in his left eye after being shot in the face by a federal agent during an anti-ICE protest, according to multiple news reports. The injury has sparked conflict over federal crowd-control tactics and accountability just days after nationwide demonstrations over the death of Renee Good in Minneapolis.
The chaos broke out on January 9 outside a federal immigration building as hundreds marched and a smaller group remained into the evening. Video verified by news outlets shows law enforcement in riot gear and one federal agent firing a projectile at close range that struck Kaden Rummler in the face. He was later seen being dragged by an agent with his face covered in blood.
Rummler, a college student, was hospitalized and underwent six hours of surgery, doctors removing shards of plastic, glass and metal from his eye and skull, with one piece remaining near his carotid artery, family members said. His aunt also said he suffers skull fractures and has “a hole in his eyeball.”
Federal authorities have not publicly confirmed what projectile was used or issued specifics on the injury, and the Department of Homeland Security has described the larger crowd as violent, claiming officers were injured.

“I will never see through my left eye again, not even light,” Rummler said in a statement shared by supporters.
The incident matters because it adds to national scrutiny of how federal agents engage with protesters and the use of so-called “less lethal” weapons. With protests already ignited by Renee Good’s death, the Santa Ana injury could fuel more demonstrations and calls for federal policy reviews.
Law enforcement spokespeople and federal officials have not yet released a detailed account of the shooting or the type of round fired.
What happens next may hinge on independent investigations into the protester’s injury and federal enforcement tactics at demonstrations.
