Alabama Police Investigate Elderly Woman Who Robbed Bank, Returned Cash Minutes Later
An elderly woman robbed a bank in Gardendale, Alabama, then immediately turned herself in, handing the money back to police. The incident is drawing attention because of how quickly the crime reversed.
Authorities say the woman entered a Regions Bank just after 9 a.m. on April 10 and passed a note demanding cash. Within minutes of receiving the money, she went directly to the police department.
According to Gardendale Police, the woman voluntarily surrendered the stolen cash and was taken into custody. No injuries were reported, and officials say there is no ongoing threat to the public.
What remains unclear is why the robbery happened at all, given the immediate surrender. Police have not released a motive, the amount taken, or the woman’s identity.

“The individual’s caregiver has been notified, and the situation is being handled appropriately,” police said.
Investigators believe the woman acted alone, and the FBI’s Birmingham office is assisting in the case. The bank temporarily closed following the incident as part of the response.
The case highlights a rare scenario where a bank robbery did not escalate into violence or a prolonged investigation, but instead raised questions about mental health, intent, and legal consequences.
Charges are still pending as authorities review the case and determine how to proceed.
For now, officials say more information could be released as the investigation develops.
