Alabama Senate Runoff Sets Up Barry Moore vs. Jared Hudson as Social Reaction Builds Around Outsider Challenge
Alabama’s Republican race for an open U.S. Senate seat is moving to a June 16 runoff between U.S. Rep. Barry Moore and former Navy SEAL Jared Hudson, setting up a sharper one-on-one contest between a Trump-backed congressman and an outsider candidate.
Moore led the GOP primary but did not win the nomination outright. Hudson narrowly secured the second runoff spot over Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, according to The Associated Press.
The result quickly picked up social media attention because of the contrast between Moore’s endorsement from President Donald Trump and Hudson’s campaign message as a political outsider. AP reported that Hudson wrote on social media that his campaign had “made history” and argued that Washington political spending would have to work harder to stop his grassroots movement.
Political observers also focused on Moore’s failure to win outright despite Trump’s backing, with posts on X describing the runoff dynamic as notable for a Trump-backed candidate in a Republican primary.

The runoff matters because the seat is being vacated by Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who is running for governor. In Alabama, the Republican nominee will enter the general election with a major advantage.
The race also carries clear stakes locally. Before the primary, Alabama Daily News reported that a Cygnal poll showed Moore leading Hudson by four points statewide, with nearly 40% of likely GOP voters still undecided. The same poll found Hudson stronger in the Birmingham media market, while Moore held a larger advantage in the Montgomery-Selma-Dothan corridor.
That makes the runoff a test of whether Hudson can turn online momentum and Birmingham-area strength into a statewide upset, or whether Moore’s Trump-backed support consolidates in the second round.
