Andy Ogles Loses Tennessee GOP Primary to Charlie Hatcher After Trump Endorsement
Trump-backed Rep. Andy Ogles lost the Republican primary for Tennessee’s 5th Congressional District to Charlie Hatcher, a former state agriculture official who entered the final stretch with backing from Gov. Bill Lee.
The Associated Press described the result as a rare rejection of a Trump-endorsed candidate, while Axios reported that Hatcher will now face Columbia Mayor Chaz Molder, the Democratic primary winner, in the general election.
The political consequence is immediate. Ogles, a House Republican known for hard-right politics and inflammatory rhetoric, will not be the GOP nominee for the seat. Hatcher becomes the Republican standard-bearer in a district that remains favorable to the party.

The race also became a test of competing Republican power centers. Trump backed Ogles, while Lee endorsed Hatcher late in the race. Outside spending also shaped the contest, including ads targeting Ogles over renewable-energy issues.
Ogles’ loss drew quick social attention because of his earlier anti-Muslim comments. Reuters reported in March that Ogles doubled down after saying Muslims did not belong in American society, comments condemned by Democrats and Muslim advocacy groups. CAIR later designated Ogles an anti-Muslim extremist.
Reaction on Reddit and local social posts framed the result as both a Tennessee political upset and a defeat for a controversial Trump-backed incumbent.
The next step is the November general election, where Hatcher faces Molder. Official certified vote totals should be added when Tennessee election officials publish final results.
