Another Month of Factory Declines Undercuts Claims the Economy Is “Strong”
U.S. manufacturing activity contracted for the tenth straight month in December, signaling sustained weakness in the factory sector that matters for jobs and economic momentum entering 2026. According to Reuters, the Institute for Supply Management’s manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) fell to 47.9, below the 50 line that separates expansion from contraction and the lowest reading since October 2024.
The persistence of contraction raises concerns about the health of a sector that accounts for roughly 10% of the U.S. economy, especially as new orders and employment indicators remain subdued. Weak demand and ongoing cost pressures were widely noted by respondents to the ISM survey, leaving manufacturers cautious at the start of the new year.
Confirmed data from December show that only 2 out of 19 manufacturing industries reported growth, with sectors like chemicals, machinery, and transportation equipment still shrinking. Backlogs and inventories remained muted, and the employment measure stayed in contraction for an eleventh month.

Trade uncertainty and elevated tariffs were repeatedly mentioned as headwinds in industry feedback, adding to slower order flows and pricing pressures. Analysts say these structural drags could delay a turnaround even as other parts of the economy show resilience.
“On the ground, demand remains tepid while upward price pressures persist,” industry analysts told clients, highlighting the mixed signals from the data.
The sustained slump matters because factory activity influences supply chains, hiring, and investment decisions, and prolonged contraction may weigh on broader economic growth forecasts. Analysts will be watching whether early 2026 data show stabilization or further weakening. The next ISM manufacturing PMI release, due in early February, will offer the first key update on trends after year-end.
