Apple Warns Musk’s Grok Could Be Pulled Over Explicit Deepfake Violations
Apple quietly threatened to pull Elon Musk’s Grok app from the App Store, escalating a growing fight over AI-generated deepfakes.
According to NBC News, the warning came after Grok was used to create nonconsensual sexual images, including content involving women and possible minors. The controversy triggered complaints, media scrutiny, and pressure from U.S. senators demanding action.
Apple contacted teams behind X and xAI, saying the app violated App Store rules and needed stronger moderation. Lawmakers had already urged Apple and Google to remove the apps entirely, citing widespread abuse.

Despite the threat, Grok remained available after xAI promised fixes. But reports from The Verge indicate users were still able to generate explicit deepfakes even after safeguards were introduced.
The standoff highlights a larger issue: app stores are increasingly acting as gatekeepers for AI tools, while enforcement struggles to keep pace with rapidly evolving misuse.
