Atlantic Beach Bike Fest Crowd Stampede Injures 19 as Officials Point to Brief Chain Reaction
Nineteen people were injured early Sunday after a crowd stampede broke out near a stage area at the Black Pearl Cultural Heritage and Bike Festival in Atlantic Beach, prompting a mass-casualty emergency response during the Memorial Day weekend event.
Horry County Fire Rescue responded around 1 a.m. near South Ocean Boulevard and evaluated 19 patients with help from law enforcement on scene. Three people were taken to a local hospital, and officials said the injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
Town officials said the incident appeared to begin when one person started running, setting off a brief chain reaction in the crowd that lasted only seconds. Officials also said there were no confirmed fights, weapons, or direct threats to public safety.
That distinction matters because early reports of a mass-casualty response can create confusion. In emergency terms, a mass-casualty incident refers to the number of people needing evaluation or treatment, not necessarily fatalities or life-threatening injuries.

The Black Pearl Cultural Heritage and Bike Festival is tied to Atlantic Beach Bike Week, a major Memorial Day weekend gathering that brings large crowds to the Grand Strand. The town’s Bike Fest page describes the rally as an annual Memorial Day weekend event with live music, entertainment, parties, and motorcycle-related activities.
According to local reporting, SLED and other responding personnel helped restore order, and the event later resumed.
The practical question now is whether crowd-flow planning, stage-area spacing, traffic controls, and public communication were enough for the size of the event. Officials have not reported any confirmed weapon threat, but the injury count gives the incident clear public-safety significance for Atlantic Beach and the wider Myrtle Beach area.
