B-52 Bomber Crashes After Takeoff at Edwards Air Force Base as Emergency Response Continues
A U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress crashed shortly after takeoff Monday at Edwards Air Force Base in Southern California, prompting a large emergency response and the temporary closure of the installation’s airfield.
Edwards officials said the aircraft went down around 11:20 a.m. local time. Emergency crews responded immediately while base personnel began implementing emergency procedures.
The installation later announced that inbound aircraft were being diverted and that non-commercial visitor access had been suspended while responders worked the scene. Officials described the situation as ongoing and said additional information would be released when available.
Authorities had not confirmed the number of people aboard the aircraft, whether there were injuries or fatalities, or what may have caused the crash.
The B-52 Stratofortress has served as a cornerstone of U.S. strategic airpower for decades and remains in active service through ongoing modernization efforts. Edwards Air Force Base, located in Kern County’s Mojave Desert, is one of the Air Force’s primary centers for aircraft testing and development and has played a major role in evaluating new military aviation systems.

Video circulating online showed a large plume of dark smoke rising from the vicinity of the base shortly after the crash, drawing significant attention across social media and aviation communities. Public discussion has focused on the condition of the crew, the aircraft’s mission, and potential implications for ongoing Air Force testing operations.
Investigators are expected to examine flight data, maintenance records, weather conditions, and witness accounts as officials work to determine what caused the aircraft to go down.
At this stage, the Air Force has released few operational details, and many key questions remain unanswered.
