Bloomberg: Israel Hit Site as Iranian Clerics Convened to Pick Next Supreme Leader
Reports say Israel struck a building linked to Iran’s Assembly of Experts in Qom on March 3, as Iran is scrambling to select a new supreme leader after Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s reported death.
The tension is over whether this was a direct hit on a live leadership vote, or a strike on a symbolic but less operational site.
Axios cited an Israeli defense official saying the target was the clerical body responsible for choosing Iran’s next leader, framing the timing as an attempt to disrupt the process.

But Anadolu Agency reported Iran’s Mehr News said the building hit was an older auxiliary structure and not used for official meetings, which contradicts claims that senior clerics were inside counting votes.
The Washington Post reported U.S. and Israeli strikes “reportedly struck” the Assembly’s office in Qom, citing a semi-official Iranian outlet, as the wider conflict escalates.
What comes next may hinge on whether Iran confirms who was present, and whether the succession timeline pauses under threat of further strikes.
