BREAKING: Senate Rebukes Trump Tariffs on Canada—But MAGA House Set to Kill It Dead
Bet there's ketchup all over the White House tonight as the Tantrum Tyrant hears the news
In a narrow but defiant vote, the U.S. Senate has passed a resolution to revoke former President Donald Trump’s controversial tariffs on Canadian imports, a stunning bipartisan rebuke of the economic nationalism that has defined Trump’s trade policy. The 51-48 vote included defections from four Republican senators, including Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, who broke ranks with their party to protect American consumers and preserve global alliances.
But don’t pop the champagne yet.
Despite this glimmer of sanity in the Senate, the resolution now heads to the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, where it faces almost certain death. Speaker Mike Johnson, a loyal Trump ally, holds the keys to the legislative gate, and all signs point to him slamming it shut.
This isn’t just about trade. It’s about whether a former president’s grip on the GOP remains so ironclad that even widely condemned economic policies that raise prices on working families and target an ally like Canada can’t be undone.
“These tariffs were never about fentanyl or national security. They were about stoking xenophobia and inflaming a base,” said Sen. Bernie Sanders, who voted in favor of the repeal. “The American people are paying the price—literally.”
The Fine Print:
The Trump tariffs were levied under a dubious “national emergency” declaration tied to fentanyl, despite Canada having no substantial link to the crisis.
The Senate resolution seeks to terminate that emergency, effectively ending the tariffs.
The House recently changed procedural rules to block challenges to presidential tariffs, making overriding Trump's trade decrees even harder.
Trump has already promised to veto the measure if it reaches his desk.
This Senate vote is a symbolic win, but symbolism won’t lower grocery bills or repair damaged U.S.-Canada relations. Democrats and a handful of Republicans stood up for common sense today. Now, Speaker Johnson and the House GOP must decide: Will they continue to serve Trump’s ego or the American people?
The pressure is on. Stay tuned. We'll be watching.

Well on a hope and prayer let’s see if the spineless house of maga has some defectors. 🤷🏻♀️
We have to assume that the House will kill the bill. It is absolutely filled with MAGA sycophants and spineless cowards on the Republican side. These tariffs are going to bring some real pain to everyone in America that is not in the billionaire class. We will see how long any sort of support for any of these assholes hold out, and if this remains the major issue with voters during the midterms. Either that or there is some kind of hostile takeover in the White House to throw the orange turd out.
