BREAKING: Two National Guard Members Critically Wounded in Shooting Near White House; Suspect in Custody
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Two National Guard members were shot and critically wounded Wednesday afternoon just blocks from the White House, prompting brief lockdowns around several federal buildings as police secured the scene.
The shooting occurred around 2:20 p.m. ET near the intersection of 17th and I Streets NW, close to the Farragut West Metro station. Emergency responders transported both Guardsmen to separate hospitals, where they remain in critical condition.
Authorities say a suspect is in custody. The gunman was also shot during the confrontation and is being treated for what officials describe as serious injuries. No motive has been released.
President Trump issued a statement shortly after the attack, calling the shooter “the animal that shot the two National Guardsmen” and confirming that all three — the two Guardsmen and the suspect — are hospitalized. “God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement,” the President wrote, adding that the suspect “will pay a very steep price.”
The Guardsmen were part of an ongoing deployment in the District. The investigation is active, and additional details are expected as federal and local agencies review surveillance footage and witness accounts.
