Bystander Disarms Gunman During Deadly Hanukkah Attack at Bondi Beach
SYDNEY — As gunfire tore through a crowded Hanukkah celebration on Sydney’s Bondi Beach, killing at least 11 people and injuring dozens, authorities say the actions of a single bystander may have prevented an even greater tragedy.
The man, identified publicly as Ahmed al-Ahmed, is a local Bondi resident and small business owner who ran toward the gunfire and helped disarm one of the attackers while the shooting was still underway, according to officials.
Police and eyewitnesses say al-Ahmed tackled one of the gunmen from behind, wrestled away his weapon, and disrupted the attack during a critical moment as panicked families fled the beachfront area. The shooting targeted a public Chabad-organized Hanukkah event marking the first night of the holiday.
During or shortly after the confrontation, al-Ahmed was shot and wounded by the second attacker. He was rushed to hospital, underwent surgery, and is expected to recover, authorities said.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns praised the bystander’s actions, calling him a “genuine hero” and saying many people were alive because of his bravery. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also highlighted the intervention, commending civilians who put themselves in danger to protect others.
Video of the moment, later verified by major news outlets, spread rapidly online, drawing widespread praise from across political, religious, and cultural lines. Many users highlighted the significance of the intervention occurring during an antisemitic attack on a Jewish celebration, describing it as an act of humanity amid violence.
Police have emphasized that civilians should not attempt to confront armed attackers, noting that the bystander’s actions were extraordinary and rare, but acknowledged that his intervention occurred during a crucial window before officers fully secured the scene.
As the investigation continues, tributes have continued to pour in, with many describing al-Ahmed as a symbol of courage and solidarity during one of Australia’s deadliest attacks in decades.
