California Supreme Court Orders GOP Sheriff to Stop 2025 Ballot Investigation
California’s Supreme Court has halted a Republican-led voter fraud investigation, ordering an immediate pause as a legal battle intensifies over election authority.
The ruling targets Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, a GOP gubernatorial candidate, who seized more than 650,000 ballots while investigating alleged irregularities in a 2025 election tied to redistricting.
According to the Associated Press, Bianco launched the probe after a local group claimed a roughly 45,000-vote discrepancy, but election officials said the numbers were misread and showed no evidence of fraud.
The California Attorney General’s office sued to stop the investigation, arguing the sheriff overstepped his authority and risked undermining election integrity, prompting the state’s highest court to intervene.

“The court ordered the sheriff to pause the investigation and preserve all seized materials,” the Associated Press reported.
The conflict underscores a broader pattern of election-related disputes, as unproven fraud claims continue to drive legal and political confrontations across states, raising concerns about public trust in voting systems.
Bianco has defended his actions as lawful and backed by a judge’s warrant, while state officials maintain that election materials must remain under the control of designated election authorities.
The case now moves forward in the California Supreme Court, where justices will decide whether the investigation itself violated state law and whether the ballots must be returned.
For now, the probe is frozen as the legal fight continues.
