Capitol Police Officers Sue to Block DOJ “Anti-Weaponization” Jan. 6 Fund
Two U.S. Capitol Police officers injured during the Jan. 6 Capitol riot are suing to block a Department of Justice-linked “anti-weaponization” compensation fund, opening a new legal and political fight tied to the continuing fallout from the 2021 Capitol attack.
CBS News reported that the officers argue the proposed fund would improperly benefit people tied to Jan. 6 prosecutions while officers injured during the riot continue dealing with lasting physical and emotional consequences.
The lawsuit seeks a court order preventing the fund from moving forward while the challenge is litigated.
The case arrives amid renewed political conflict over how the federal government handled Jan. 6 prosecutions. Some conservative figures and online commentators have argued federal authorities unfairly targeted defendants connected to the Capitol riot, often describing the prosecutions as politically motivated or “weaponized.”

At the same time, many Capitol Police supporters, former law enforcement officials, and Jan. 6 investigators argue those narratives minimize the violence officers faced during the attack and undermine accountability for the riot.
More than 140 law enforcement officers were injured during the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol, according to federal authorities. The Justice Department later launched one of the largest criminal investigations in U.S. history tied to the attack.
The lawsuit now places those competing narratives directly into federal court through a dispute over compensation, victim status, and DOJ-related funding.
The legal challenge could carry broader implications because it tests whether courts are willing to intervene in politically charged federal compensation efforts connected to Jan. 6 prosecutions and the continuing national debate surrounding the Capitol riot.
No ruling has yet been issued.
