Capitol Police See 14,938 Threat Cases as Ilhan Omar Attacker Pleads Guilty
A guilty plea in the Ilhan Omar town hall attack is landing in a much bigger story: attacks and threats against elected officials kept climbing after Donald Trump returned to office in 2025. The new development closes one case, but it does not resolve the wider security problem.
According to CBS Minnesota, Anthony Kazmierczak changed his plea to guilty after being charged with spraying Omar during a January town hall in Minneapolis. Earlier federal records said the liquid was apple cider vinegar and water, and prosecutors had accused him of forcibly assaulting Omar while she was performing official duties.

The plea comes after a string of other attacks on officeholders since Trump’s second term began on Jan. 20, 2025. Reuters and AP reported that a suspect set fire to Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s residence while his family was inside. Reuters also reported that Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman was killed and Sen. John Hoffman was wounded in a targeted June 2025 shooting. AP separately reported that Rep. Maxwell Frost was punched at Sundance in January 2026.
The backdrop is getting harder to ignore. Capitol Police said threat cases tied to Congress jumped to 14,938 in 2025, and CBS News found 126 federal prosecutions tied to threats against public officials that year.
