“CBS News Is a Wreck”: David Letterman’s Viral Rant Sparks Debate
Veteran television host David Letterman is sharply criticizing CBS News, calling the network “a wreck” following major leadership and programming changes late last year.
Letterman’s remarks come from a video clip posted to his YouTube channel on Jan. 9, in which he appeared on The Barbara Gaines Show, hosted by former producers. In the segment, Letterman expressed personal disappointment with the network’s current direction, saying its journalistic integrity had been “trampled on” after decades as one of broadcast news’ most respected institutions.
The comments arrive amid a period of rapid transition at CBS News. In October 2025, conservative journalist Bari Weiss was appointed editor-in-chief. The changes followed the merger of Paramount Global, CBS’s parent company, with Skydance Media, overseen by CEO David Ellison.
Letterman contrasted the network’s legacy — referencing iconic figures such as Edward R. Murrow — with what he described as a diminished newsroom culture. “CBS News is a wreck. It’s just gone,” he said, adding that the overhaul was “hurting my feelings” after more than 20 years with the company as host of Late Show.

CBS News has also made high-profile programming moves, including installing Tony Dokoupil as the solo anchor of CBS Evening News, part of a broader effort to address lagging ratings and reshape the network’s identity.
Reaction online has been swift and polarized. Clips of Letterman’s comments spread widely across social media, drawing praise from critics who see the changes as politically motivated, while defenders of the overhaul argue the network is attempting to recalibrate its editorial balance and reconnect with audiences.
CBS News has not issued a public response to Letterman’s remarks.
