Chuck Schumer Breaks With Democrats as Israel Arms Block Vote Fails
A Senate vote to block U.S. weapons sales to Israel failed—but exposed a major shift inside the Democratic Party.
Most Senate Democrats backed resolutions led by Sen. Bernie Sanders to stop sending bombs and bulldozers to Israel, according to AP News and Reuters. The measures were ultimately defeated after Republicans—and a small group of Democrats—voted them down.
The votes were 40–59 and 36–63, falling short of passage despite growing Democratic support. According to reporting, only seven Democrats joined Republicans on one of the key votes, marking a sharp change from previous years.

The weapons in question are tied to Israeli military operations in Gaza and Lebanon, which have drawn increasing scrutiny over civilian impact.
Still, party leadership—including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer—opposed the effort, underscoring internal divisions.
While the resolutions failed, analysts say the vote signals rising pressure within Congress to reconsider U.S. military support for Israel.
