Clash in D.C.: Counter-Protester Arrested as Jan. 6 Supporters March on 5th Anniversary
Dozens of supporters of the January 6 Capitol attack marched through Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, five years after the deadly assault on the United States Capitol, and a brawl erupted as a counter-protester was arrested. According to NBC4 Washington and The Guardian, the event drew back figures tied to the 2021 siege, renewing political tensions on the anniversary.
The rally, promoted as a memorial march for those who died around January 6 including Ashli Babbitt, escalated when opposing demonstrators confronted marchers, leading to a scuffle on the streets near the Capitol. Police intervened and detained at least one individual opposing the march.
Confirmed reports show participants waved American flags, carried signs reading slogans such as “Thanks for our pardons, Trump,” and marched from near the White House toward the Capitol grounds. The crowd included individuals pardoned by President Trump for their roles in the 2021 attack, most notably former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio, who has openly supported the event.
The arrival of counter-protesters underscored deep divides in how January 6 is commemorated and interpreted, as law enforcement kept the groups separated after the initial clash.

“Today’s events show that the conflict over January 6’s legacy hasn’t faded — it’s transformed into a new kind of political flashpoint,” said a local law enforcement official monitoring the march. Law enforcement attribution.
The anniversary comes amid broader national fights over pardons and political narratives of the 2021 attack. Some Washington lawmakers are holding hearings and commemorative events as rival factions mark the date differently.
