Connecticut Man Used Kik, Telegram to Target FBI Agent; Gets 80-Month Sentence
A Connecticut man has been sentenced to federal prison for threatening to torture and kill an FBI agent and the agent’s family online. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in South Carolina, 32-year-old Scott Robert Tardy received an 80-month prison term after pleading guilty to cyberstalking, lying to the FBI and obstruction of justice. Prosecutors say Tardy used encrypted apps on Kik and Telegram, shared photos and a pinned map of the agent’s home, and solicited violence against the agent and spouse.

The FBI recovered evidence even after Tardy reset his phone and denied involvement. The judge imposed a sentence above federal guidelines due to the lasting trauma on victims, plus three years’ supervised release and over $5,000 restitution. According to the DOJ, Tardy worked as a corrections officer at the time, and federal officials say they will continue to pursue threats made against law enforcement and their families.
