Conservative Justice Annette Ziegler Won’t Seek 2027 Reelection, Opening Wisconsin Court Fight
Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Annette Ziegler says she will not seek reelection in 2027, opening a new race that could shape the ideological balance of the state’s highest court.
The announcement immediately raises questions about whether the court’s current liberal majority could expand even further in one of the country’s most closely watched judicial battlegrounds.
Ziegler, a conservative justice first elected in 2007, said Monday she plans to step down when her term ends in 2027 after roughly three decades on the bench. According to Wisconsin Public Radio and FOX6 Milwaukee, she will finish her current term but will not appear on the April 2027 ballot.
The move sets up another open-seat election for the seven-member court. Liberals currently hold a 4–3 majority after flipping control in 2023, a shift that ended years of conservative dominance and turned Wisconsin Supreme Court races into nationally funded political contests.
“After three decades on the bench, now is the right time for me to step away,” Ziegler said in a statement announcing the decision.

The stakes go beyond a single seat. According to the Associated Press, the court is expected to rule on cases involving redistricting, abortion law, union rights, and school funding — issues that could shape policy statewide.
Because Ziegler currently sits in the conservative minority, the ideological control of the court may not change immediately. But if liberal candidates win future elections, the majority margin could widen, making it harder for conservatives to influence major rulings.
Another statewide Supreme Court election is already scheduled for April 2026, meaning the court’s balance could shift even before the 2027 race arrives.
For now, Ziegler’s announcement guarantees that Wisconsin voters will once again decide the direction of their highest court.
