Coons Warns Trump Is ‘Sleepwalking Into War’ After U.S. Seizes Venezuelan Tanker
A Senate Democrat is raising new alarms about the Trump administration’s posture toward Venezuela, warning that recent U.S. actions could push the two countries toward an unintended conflict. The concern resurfaced this week after reports confirming the United States seized a Venezuelan oil tanker earlier this week.
Sen. Chris Coons said he fears the administration is “sleepwalking us into a war,” arguing that the escalation appears to be happening without a clearly communicated strategy. His warning comes as former President Trump publicly acknowledged the tanker operation and suggested the U.S. may keep the oil found on board, a position that immediately drew criticism from Venezuela’s government.
According to Reuters, U.S. officials described the tanker seizure as part of an ongoing enforcement campaign in the Caribbean. Mediaite reported that Coons questioned whether Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and the administration fully understood the potential consequences of taking more aggressive steps in the region.
But the senator’s remarks highlight an unresolved tension: the administration has not outlined what it considers a proportional or achievable objective, leaving lawmakers uncertain about how far the U.S. may be willing to go. That ambiguity has fueled fresh concerns in Congress about the risk of escalation.
“We cannot stumble into a conflict we are not prepared for,” Coons said during the televised interview.
The broader worry is that fragmented decision-making and limited communication could create a pattern of rapid escalation, especially as Venezuela denounces U.S. operations near its coast. Past regional confrontations show how quickly military posturing can harden into something more dangerous.
Lawmakers are now pressing for briefings on the objectives, limits, and diplomatic channels involved in the Venezuela response, hoping to prevent a slide into open hostilities.
For now, the situation remains unsettled, with both sides watching closely for the next move.
