Dan Bongino Returns, Turns on MAGA Critics After FBI Exit
Washington — Dan Bongino, the conservative media figure and former FBI Deputy Director, is signaling a return to broadcasting after resigning from government earlier this year — and he’s doing so by openly attacking what he calls internal threats to the MAGA movement.
Bongino served as Deputy Director of the FBI under Director Kash Patel beginning in early 2025. He announced his resignation on January 1, 2026, after roughly ten months in the role. During his tenure, Bongino publicly emphasized efforts tied to high-profile matters including the January 6 pipe bomb investigation and the Supreme Court’s 2022 abortion-related document leak, though no major public breakthroughs were announced during that period.
In a series of posts on X on January 5, Bongino thanked supporters and described his time in government as “the experience of a lifetime,” while teasing upcoming announcements related to the return of his media platform. At the same time, he issued a sharply worded rebuke aimed at what he described as “black-pillers” — critics who argue the movement has failed to deliver on promises — and “grifters” he accused of exploiting MAGA for personal gain.

Bongino urged those voices to “leave now” ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, framing his message as a push for discipline, unity, and results rather than pessimism. “We’re about results,” he wrote, dismissing critics and defending the Trump political project.
The remarks drew widespread attention after Mediaite characterized Bongino’s comments as “declaring war” on internal movement critics. Bongino responded directly to the framing, replying: “You’re damn right I did.”
Reaction on social media was deeply divided. Supporters praised Bongino’s return as a morale boost and welcomed his attack on internal dissenters. Critics, including some conservative voices, accused him of deflecting accountability, suppressing criticism, or failing to deliver tangible results during his time in government. Others warned the rhetoric risks alienating parts of the MAGA base already frustrated by unmet expectations.
The episode underscores ongoing fractures inside the conservative movement as figures jockey for influence ahead of a pivotal election cycle.
