Danish MP Slams U.S. Official’s Greenland Remarks as Showing “Rapist Mentality”
Danish lawmaker Rasmus Jarlov went on national television to criticize U.S. official Stephen Miller, saying Miller’s aggressive comments about Greenland show “the mentality of a rapist” — and that remark is now drawing international attention. The exchange matters now because it highlights deepening diplomatic tension between Denmark and the United States over the future of the Arctic territory.
The clash erupted as Jarlov responded to Miller’s arguments that Denmark cannot defend Greenland and that the U.S. should take a more assertive role, a stance many Danish officials view as unacceptable pressure. Jarlov’s analogy — comparing a refusal to defend territory to predatory intent — injected sharp language into an already fraught geopolitical debate.
In the Jan. 17 interview, Jarlov said, “You can’t defend yourself, so I’m going to take you. That’s basically what he’s saying,” before adding Miller should be kept “away from young women” because of “the mentality of a rapist.”
Critics called the metaphor undiplomatic and inappropriate, even as Jarlov sought to underline what he sees as an overreach in U.S. rhetoric on Greenland’s future. The U.S.–Danish dispute over Arctic strategy and territorial control has become a broader diplomatic flashpoint.

“This analogy was meant to puncture the tone, not define our policy,” Jarlov told MS NOW, according to footage of the interview.
The remark underscores how strained discussions have become as Denmark pushes back on U.S. efforts perceived as challenging its Arctic sovereignty.
Diplomats from both capitals are now weighing the impact of the comments on broader negotiations over security cooperation and alliance unity.
What happens next: Officials on both sides are expected to issue clarifications as Denmark seeks to cool diplomatic strain while maintaining its rejection of any U.S. takeover of Greenland.
