Deep-Red District in Play: NBC Reveals Democrats Surging Within Striking Distance in TN-7
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — NBC News Chief Data Analyst Steve Kornacki says Democrats are hoping for a significant overperformance in today’s special election in Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District — a contest that has turned into one of the most closely watched races of the year.

The seat, vacated earlier this year, has historically been solid Republican territory. But Democratic candidate Aftyn Behn is attempting to mount a surprise challenge against Republican Matt Van Epps, turning a normally low-profile special election into a test of political momentum heading into the 2026 midterms.
Speaking on Meet the Press NOW, Kornacki broke down the electoral map and turnout patterns, noting that Behn would need to “substantially overperform” in key suburban areas to flip the district. Early voting numbers have offered some encouragement for Democrats, but Election Day turnout traditionally favors Republicans.
NBC Capitol Hill Correspondent Mel Zanona added that national party organizations are quietly watching the race for signs of voter sentiment. A closer-than-expected result — regardless of who wins — could signal shifting political winds in districts once considered safely red.
Polls leading into Election Day showed a tightening contest, with surveys from Emerson College Polling and local outlets placing the race within the margin of error. Younger voters and suburban precincts are breaking more strongly toward Behn, while older and rural voters continue to back Van Epps.
Both parties are framing tonight’s outcome as a bellwether for next year’s congressional map. Democrats see an opportunity to demonstrate growing strength in red-leaning districts. Republicans hope to hold the line — and avoid a warning sign that could echo into 2026.
Results are expected later Tuesday evening.
