Democratic Candidate Wins Big in Louisiana District Trump Carried by 13 Points
A Democratic candidate comfortably won a Louisiana special election in a district President Trump carried by about 13 points, confirming a strong showing for Democrats in state legislative contests.
Martinez’s victory raises questions about Republican momentum in traditionally red areas as her win came despite GOP expectations for a pickup this cycle.
According to CBS News, Chasity Verret Martinez, a Democrat and former Iberville Parish councilwoman, defeated Republican Brad Daigle roughly 62% to 38% in Saturday’s special election for Louisiana House District 60.
The seat was vacated when Democrat Chad Brown resigned to accept a state government appointment. Though Democrats held the seat, Republicans saw an opening given Trump’s 2024 performance in the district.
Martinez reportedly ran on local issues like affordability and infrastructure while being outspent by her opponents roughly 3-to-1.

“It was about listening to families and being present in the community,” Martinez said in remarks to supporters after the race was called by media outlets.
Her win matters because it suggests Democratic resilience even in districts that lean Republican at the presidential level, and comes amid similar special election upsets in other states that have grabbed national attention. Conservatives had hoped to record the first state legislative pickup of Donald Trump’s second administration; instead, Democrats held firm.
The next step is certification of results, expected this week, followed by Martinez’s swearing-in to the Louisiana House. Observers will watch whether this result foreshadows broader trends heading into 2026 midterms.
