Democratic Senator Says Trump’s Actions Are “Impeachable”
WASHINGTON — January 11, 2026 — Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said Sunday that President Donald Trump has committed “ten times more impeachable offenses” in his second term than during his first, accusing the president of engaging in what he described as unprecedented corruption.
Appearing on Meet the Press, Murphy responded to host Kristen Welker’s question about whether Trump had crossed the threshold for impeachment. Murphy said Trump’s conduct amounts to “nuclear-grade corruption,” alleging the president has used his office for personal gain.
Among the examples Murphy cited was Trump’s reported acceptance of a luxury jet tied to the government of Qatar, as well as what Murphy described as foreign financial ventures involving cryptocurrency that raise national security concerns. Murphy argued these actions constitute “stealing from the American people.”

Murphy also rejected previous Democratic leadership caution around impeachment, contrasting his position with past reluctance expressed by figures such as Nancy Pelosi during Trump’s first term. He framed the issue as one of accountability rather than partisan politics.
While acknowledging that Republicans currently control Congress, making impeachment unlikely in the near term, Murphy suggested his remarks reflect the type of action Democrats could pursue if they regain the House in the 2026 midterm elections.
The White House has not responded to Murphy’s remarks. Reaction online has been sharply divided along partisan lines, with supporters amplifying Murphy’s comments and critics dismissing them as political rhetoric.
