Denmark Summons U.S. Ambassador After Trump Appoints Greenland Envoy
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has appointed Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry as the United States Special Envoy to Greenland, a move that prompted a diplomatic response from Denmark and public statements from Greenland’s leadership emphasizing sovereignty and self-determination.
Trump announced the appointment Sunday in a social media post, citing Greenland’s strategic importance to U.S. national security and global interests. Landry will serve in the role on a voluntary basis while continuing his duties as governor of Louisiana.
Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. While Greenland controls most domestic affairs, Denmark retains authority over foreign policy and defense matters.
Danish officials reacted sharply to the announcement. On Monday, Denmark’s Foreign Ministry summoned the U.S. ambassador, describing the appointment as unacceptable and warning that diplomatic engagement concerning Greenland must respect Denmark’s sovereignty and established international arrangements.
Greenland’s Premier, Orla Joelsen, issued a separate public statement seeking to reassure residents. He said the appointment does not change Greenland’s political status or decision-making authority, emphasizing that Greenland determines its own future and that any cooperation with other countries must respect Greenlandic values, democracy, and territorial integrity.

Joelsen added that Greenland remains open to cooperation with the United States and other nations, provided such engagement is conducted with mutual respect. He said there is no reason for concern and urged unity as the territory approaches the holiday season.
The appointment has reignited attention on Trump’s long-standing interest in Greenland, including his previously rejected proposal during his first term to acquire the territory from Denmark. Greenland’s strategic location in the Arctic and its mineral resources have drawn increasing international attention as geopolitical competition in the region grows.
The White House has not announced any immediate policy changes tied to the envoy role, and it remains unclear how the position will function within existing U.S.–Denmark diplomatic channels.
Developments surrounding the appointment and diplomatic discussions between Washington and Copenhagen are ongoing.
