Department of War Name Change Advances as Senate Committee Backs Trump Effort
The Senate Armed Services Committee has advanced legislation that would formally rename the Department of Defense as the Department of War, marking the latest congressional step toward making one of President Donald Trump’s most visible government rebranding efforts permanent.
The proposal was included in the Senate version of the National Defense Authorization Act after a similar measure cleared the House Armed Services Committee. If approved by both chambers and signed into law, the change would reverse a designation that has been in place since 1947.

Supporters argue the name more accurately reflects the military’s mission and restores historical terminology used before the creation of the modern Department of Defense. Critics have questioned the practical value of the move and pointed to administrative costs associated with updating federal statutes, regulations, and military materials.
The proposal remains far from final, but its inclusion in both House and Senate defense bills shows growing Republican support for one of Trump’s most symbolic efforts to reshape the federal government.
