ICE Raid Ends in Fatal Shooting, Raising Calls for Accountability
Minneapolis, MN — January 7, 2026 — A large-scale immigration enforcement operation in south Minneapolis on Wednesday resulted in the death of a woman after an ICE agent fired at her vehicle, according to initial reports from federal and local authorities.
The incident occurred near East 34th Street and Portland Avenue during an operation that federal officials said involved up to 2,000 U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents targeting deportations in the Twin Cities. Federal authorities described the shooting as an act of self-defense, claiming the woman attempted to strike officers with her vehicle. The Department of Homeland Security said the agent fired after she allegedly weaponized her SUV in an attempt to run over officers.
An official DHS statement described the encounter as a dangerous escalation and labeled actions against officers as “domestic terrorism.” According to the statement, no ICE agents were seriously injured and officers hurt in the incident are expected to make full recoveries.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed the woman was shot in the head and died at the scene, and that a joint investigation involving local and federal authorities is underway.
The woman’s identity and motive remain under investigation. Initial media reports cited conflicting information about her age and role at the scene.

Mayor Jacob Frey disputed the federal account after reviewing available video footage, saying the vehicle was reversing away from officers when shots were fired and calling the self-defense explanation “bullsh—.” He demanded that ICE leave the city, accusing agents of causing chaos and escalating tensions.
Witnesses and some social media posts described the woman as a protester, legal observer, or bystander, though official confirmation of her status has not yet been released.
Protests erupted near the scene after the shooting, with crowds confronting agents as pepper spray was deployed and chants broke out. The operation and shooting unfolded just blocks from where George Floyd was killed in 2020, contributing to heightened local concerns.
The incident has triggered intense public debate online, with sharply divided reactions over the justification for the shooting and broader questions about immigration enforcement tactics and political rhetoric.
As of this writing, both the Minneapolis Police Department and federal authorities have said investigations continue and more information will be released when available.
