DHS Faces Taxpayer Fury After ICE Order Leaves 2,500 Vehicles Unused
A multimillion-dollar fleet order for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is now sitting idle, after agents warned the vehicles would compromise enforcement operations.
According to reporting from International Business Times and the Washington Examiner, ICE acquired roughly 2,500 branded SUVs and pickup trucks in 2025 under then-deputy director Madison Sheahan, a 28-year-old political appointee allied with former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.
The vehicles were wrapped in dark navy paint with ICE logos and the slogan “Defend the Homeland.” But agents say clearly marked vehicles make undercover arrests nearly impossible because they alert communities when immigration officers arrive.

Sources told the Washington Examiner that many vehicles are now stored in garages or detention centers nationwide, with some used only for transporting detainees already in custody.
Career ICE officials reportedly were not consulted before the purchase, and agents say they would have opposed marked vehicles because the agency historically relies on unmarked cars for field operations.
DHS is now attempting to modify remaining deliveries so vehicles arrive without the branding, though the total cost of the order has not been publicly disclosed.
