DHS Secretary Noem Denies Saying She Acted at Trump and Miller’s Direction
Sen. John Kennedy confronted DHS Secretary Kristi Noem in a Senate hearing over reports she told a journalist on January 27 that “everything I’ve done I’ve done at the direction of the president and Stephen [Miller].”
According to reporting, that phrase was attributed to Noem by anonymous sources. Kennedy pressed her on the quote, saying it was “on the record,” but Noem denied ever saying those exact words and called the news accounts unreliable. She instead said she enjoys working with both President Trump and Stephen Miller, the White House adviser.

The exchange is part of broader scrutiny of DHS leadership over controversial immigration enforcement, including federal agents killing two U.S. citizens and rapid “domestic terrorism” characterizations that lawmakers say may bias investigations.
Democrats are pushing for more oversight into whether senior officials’ public comments have improperly influenced internal DHS investigations.
According to CBS News reporting, Noem challenged the framing of Kennedy’s question.
