DOJ Adds Terrorism Charges Against D.C. Pipe Bomb Suspect Amid Pardon Fight
A major escalation is unfolding in the long-running D.C. pipe bomb case, as the suspect now faces terrorism-level charges while still fighting to have the case dismissed.
Brian Cole Jr., accused of planting explosive devices near both political party headquarters in 2021, has been hit with two new federal charges, according to CBS News.
Those charges include attempting to use weapons of mass destruction and committing an act of terrorism while armed.
The update adds new legal pressure to a case already tied to the events surrounding January 6, where the bombs—though never detonated—triggered evacuations and diverted law enforcement.

At the same time, Cole’s attorneys have argued the charges should be thrown out, claiming his actions fall under presidential pardons issued for January 6 defendants.
Federal prosecutors have pushed back, maintaining the case falls outside that protection.
The clash now sets up a high-stakes legal fight that could redefine how far those pardons actually reach.
