DOJ Files Lawsuit Claiming Minnesota Violates Title IX in Girls Sports
The Justice Department has sued Minnesota, escalating a national fight over Title IX and transgender athletes in girls’ sports.
According to the DOJ, the state’s policy allowing transgender girls to compete violates federal law by creating unfair competition and denying equal opportunities to female athletes. The lawsuit targets Minnesota’s education department and high school sports league, seeking damages and a court order to halt current policies.
But Minnesota officials are pushing back hard.
State Attorney General Keith Ellison called the lawsuit politically driven and said Minnesota will defend its laws protecting transgender students.
The stakes are high. Federal officials have tied the case to more than $3 billion in annual education funding, raising the risk of major financial consequences.
This lawsuit is part of a broader federal campaign targeting similar policies nationwide, setting up a legal battle that could reshape how Title IX is enforced across the country.
