DOJ Warns Spanberger It Will Sue If Virginia Signs AR-15 Sales Ban
The DOJ is escalating a major legal threat against Virginia’s governor over pending gun laws, setting up a federal-state showdown before anything is even signed.
According to The National News Desk, the Department of Justice warned Gov. Abigail Spanberger it will sue if she approves legislation restricting gun rights, including a proposed ban on AR-15-style rifle sales.
The warning came in a formal letter from Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, who said the federal government is prepared to take legal action if Virginia enacts laws that “unconstitutionally limit” Second Amendment rights.

At the center of the conflict is SB 749, a bill passed by Virginia lawmakers that would criminalize the purchase or sale of certain rifles.
But the situation is still unresolved. Spanberger has already signed some gun-related measures and has not yet decided on this specific bill, leaving the DOJ’s threat hanging over the decision.
The standoff highlights a growing national clash between federal enforcement priorities and state-level gun control efforts.
