Don Lemon Freed After Federal Arrest in Controversial Church Protest Case
Federal agents arrested former CNN anchor Don Lemon in Los Angeles on Thursday night on federal civil rights charges tied to a Minnesota church protest — and he was released without bond the following afternoon, court records and news reports show.
The Justice Department alleges Lemon, now an independent journalist, violated federal law by interfering with worshippers’ First Amendment rights during a Jan. 18 anti-ICE protest that disrupted a service at Cities Church in St. Paul, Minnesota, prosecutors said.
Authorities charged Lemon alongside other journalists and activists under civil rights statutes and the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, a law more commonly used in abortion clinic cases, according to multiple outlets including AP News and Reuters.
Lemon’s attorney and civil liberties advocates have argued the former CNN anchor was doing constitutionally protected reporting, not participating in the protest itself, raising sharp concerns about press freedom and government overreach.

“I have spent my entire career covering the news. I will not stop now,” Lemon said outside court after his release, pledging to fight the charges.
Legal experts say applying these statutes to journalists could set a troubling precedent, especially when covering civil unrest or controversial events, which has sparked national debate over the limits of press protections.
Lemon’s release came with conditions: he must stay away from identified witnesses and cannot travel internationally without permission, although a planned trip to France is allowed.
His next court appearance is scheduled for early February in federal court in Minneapolis, where the case will move forward.
The outcome could have implications for how journalists cover protests and confrontations involving law enforcement or political tensions in the coming months.
