DRC Reports Record Ebola Case Surge as Outbreak Expands Beyond Ituri Province
Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo reported 72 new Ebola infections in a single day, one of the largest daily increases since the current outbreak was declared in May.
The latest figures bring the outbreak to 782 confirmed cases and 181 confirmed deaths, according to the Congolese Ministry of Health.
More than 90% of infections have been recorded in Ituri Province, though the virus has expanded into North Kivu and South Kivu and has also crossed into neighboring Uganda. Health officials say new transmission zones continue to emerge as surveillance teams identify additional cases.
The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, a less common form of the virus that lacks an approved vaccine or targeted treatment. Public-health officials say that limitation has complicated response efforts compared with previous outbreaks involving strains for which vaccines were available.

Response teams face additional challenges from ongoing armed conflict, large-scale population displacement, poor transportation infrastructure, and community mistrust in some affected regions. Contact tracing has fallen well below ideal levels, increasing concern about undetected transmission chains.
International organizations including the World Health Organization and Africa CDC have expanded support while urging governments and donors to increase funding and logistical assistance. Officials say treatment centers are under growing pressure as cases continue to rise.
The current outbreak has already become one of the most significant Ebola emergencies in recent Congolese history, and health authorities are working to prevent further spread into new regions and neighboring countries.
