Elon GUTS Nuclear Experts, Then BEGS Them to Return
The absurdity of laying off nuclear warhead experts—and begging them to come back 24 hours later
On February 13, 2025, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) did something so profoundly stupid that even the most cynical among us had to pause and ask: Are we actually this dumb?
Under the direction of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—yes, that’s really what it’s called—led by none other than billionaire tech-bro-in-chief Elon Musk, the Department of Energy laid off 350 employees. Among them? Experts responsible for maintaining the U.S. nuclear arsenal. Because, hey, what could go wrong?
Then, less than 24 hours later, the Trump administration realized, Oh wait, nuclear weapons need to be maintained by actual people. And just like that, most of the terminations were reversed. Not all—28 unlucky souls remained fired—but the vast majority were hurriedly reinstated. Because, believe it or not, nuclear bombs don’t check themselves for malfunctions.
The Billionaire Brain Rot That Got Us Here
So how did we get to the point where a billionaire best known for over-promising on self-driving cars was suddenly in charge of deciding who keeps America’s nukes operational? Simple: we let the ultra-wealthy convince us that the government should be run like a Silicon Valley startup.
You know, the same playbook Musk used at Twitter: fire everyone, realize the site doesn’t run on magic, then desperately rehire people who actually know what they’re doing. But this time, instead of a social media meltdown, the stakes were national security.
DOGE (again, yes, really the name) is Musk’s pet project to slash federal jobs in the name of “efficiency.” But efficiency for who? Not for the workers, who were blindsided by mass firings. Not for the country, which briefly had fewer trained professionals overseeing its nuclear weapons. And certainly not for national security, which requires experienced personnel, not a cost-cutting experiment.
A Nuclear-Level Screw-Up
The impact of this disaster went beyond confusion and chaos. Imagine spending years ensuring that nuclear weapons don’t unexpectedly detonate or fall into the wrong hands, only to wake up one morning locked out of your email, your job gone without notice.
It wasn’t until lawmakers and security experts raised the alarm that the administration scrambled to undo the damage. But by then, the message was clear: No one’s job is safe—not even the people keeping the literal nuclear arsenal functional.
And let’s not forget the bigger picture. The U.S. is currently spending $750 billion to “modernize” its nuclear stockpile. That effort requires stability, long-term planning, and highly skilled professionals. So what’s the logic in gutting the workforce responsible for that? Oh, right—there isn’t any.

Government “Efficiency” is Always a Scam
Here’s the truth: when they say they’re making government more efficient, what they really mean is cutting jobs, breaking unions, and making life harder for working people. You never see them cutting back on tax breaks for billionaires or slashing corporate subsidies—just the workers keeping the country functional.
Elon Musk, the supposed efficiency guru, didn’t fire himself, did he? No, he targeted the people at the bottom, the ones without golden parachutes, the ones who actually do the work. That’s not efficiency—that’s just class warfare.
What’s Next?
The real danger here isn’t just one botched layoff debacle. It’s the precedent. If a billionaire’s cost-cutting whims can override common sense and national security, what’s stopping them from doing it again? What happens when the next round of layoffs doesn’t get reversed in time?
This isn’t a game. This isn’t some quarterly earnings report. This is about nuclear weapons, and the people making sure they don’t end up in the hands of a rogue state—or worse, malfunction on their own.
So the next time a billionaire tells you they know how to run the government better, ask them: If you’re so good at efficiency, why do your own companies always end up begging workers to come back?
Because if Elon Musk wants to experiment with mass layoffs, fine. But maybe, just maybe, not with the people keeping our nukes from going off.

Unbelievable. It's very scary. One of the steps toward a fascist takeover is to make fast actions without any consideration for the consequences.
I want to know exactly who made the decision to fire these people, and all the other federal workers. Musk? His 19 year-old Musk Rats? Some collaborating supervisors, fearful for their own jobs? Someone has to be held accountable.
Why aren't these questions being asked by legislators, and more importantly, why aren't we being given the answers?
DOGE keeps pushing its nefarious ways into federal systems. No one is stopping it. It's now in the IRS.
Other issues are looming from these asinine and reckless actions.
If we ever get their federal government and its systems back, we must look towards compensating the harm that is being done to these workers. This is not the way to treat people who have very important roles in keeping our country safe and running.
I'm thinking of the UK post office scandal that devastated those workers. Eighteen years later, some of them are receiving financial compensation for the harm done, but it doesn't make up for the emotional and psychological harm.

I would have ignored my phone for a day or two if I was one of those absolutely needed workers that the government needs to protect the country.
