Elon Musk Dismantled 18F—Now Taxpayers Will Pay the Price
The Government’s Best Tech Team Just Got Axed. Get Ready for Broken Websites, Higher Costs, and Corporate Takeovers.
Imagine filing your taxes for free, only to wake up one day and find that option gone. Imagine logging into Social Security online and hitting an error page instead of your benefits.
This isn’t some dystopian warning. It’s the very real consequence of the U.S. government dismantling its top digital services agency, 18F, which threatens online public services and hands even more power to profit-driven private tech giants.
And guess who helped push it through? Elon Musk and Trump’s DOGE dedicated to gutting public programs.
If you’ve ever used IRS Direct File, Login.gov, or Social Security’s website, this decision could soon make your life harder.
What Was 18F, and Why Did It Matter?
Founded in 2014, 18F was the government’s tech startup, run by top engineers and designers committed to making public services efficient, modern, and accessible.
Their work saved taxpayers millions by:
Creating IRS Direct File, a free alternative to TurboTax and H&R Block.
Improving Login.gov so Americans could access Social Security, Medicare, and student loans without juggling dozens of passwords.
Revamping outdated government websites, slashing red tape, and putting citizens first instead of bureaucratic inefficiency.
18F cut out wasteful private contractors, saved taxpayer dollars, and built tools for the people. So why was it axed?
What Happens Now? A Future of Frustration and Higher Costs
With 18F gone, critical government tech projects are in limbo. Here’s what’s at stake:
1. IRS Direct File Could Be Scrapped—Forcing You Back to TurboTax
IRS Direct File was a game-changer, allowing millions to file their taxes for free. Now? With no clear plan for continued funding, the program is at risk.
Who benefits? Tax-prep giants like Intuit (TurboTax) and H&R Block lobbied aggressively to kill free tax filing options. If Direct File disappears, expect to pay more to do your civic duty.
2. Government Logins Could Become Less Secure
Login.gov was designed to be a single, secure gateway to government services. Without expert oversight, the risk of fraud, security breaches, and identity theft will grow.
3. Expect Broken, Outdated Government Websites
We’ve all been stuck in bureaucratic hell on a glitchy government site. 18F was fixing that. Now? Expect longer wait times, broken pages, and frustration when renewing a passport, applying for student loans, or accessing healthcare.
4. Big Tech Could Take Over at Your Expense
With 18F gone, who fills the gap? Likely Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, who won’t work for free.
More private control over public services
More costs, fees, and potential ads in government tools
More of your personal data in corporate hands
What happens when these companies decide your access is no longer profitable?

Why Did This Happen? Follow the Money and Politics
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) quietly dismantled 18F, handing a victory to anti-government ideologues and corporate lobbyists.
Elon Musk cheered the move, calling 18F ‘far left’ and accusing it of ‘subverting’ Trump’s administration. His retweet of its shutdown? A smug “Deleted.”
However, critics say cutting 18F would be the opposite of making the government more efficient. Instead, it eliminates the very people making public services work better.
Who’s Fighting Back?
The backlash is growing:
Former 18F employees are warning of significant disruptions to key services.
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) is investigating the impact of losing IRS Direct File.
Progressive lawmakers are questioning whether these cuts can be reversed.
What Can You Do?
If you care about keeping government services free, secure, and accessible, here’s how to fight back:
Call Your Representatives – Demand continued funding for IRS Direct File, Login.gov, and government tech modernization.
Spread the Word – Share this article and raise awareness. Most Americans don’t even realize this is happening.
Stay Vigilant – Watch how these cuts impact government services over the next year and vote accordingly.
Final Thoughts: A Battle for Public vs. Private Control
In an era where everything is online, we can’t afford a dysfunctional, insecure, and more expensive digital government.
Eliminating 18F doesn’t just set us back—it hands control of public services to corporations whose only goal is profit.
Will Americans fight back, or will we accept a future where our own government works against us?

Musk will dismantle anything and everything that impedes him from taking it over and gaining from it. Not much if anything is about efficiency it is all about Musk being in charge and reaping the money. Why else has he taken down the agencies. It will be hard to climb out of this mess but we must.
Brutal coming!!!
