Elon Musk Effigy Targets Grok Controversy Ahead of SpaceX IPO
A giant inflatable effigy of Elon Musk appeared in Times Square on Thursday as activists sought to connect ongoing controversies surrounding Grok, the AI chatbot developed by xAI, to SpaceX’s upcoming public debut.
The demonstration was organized by Safe AI Now (SAIN), which positioned the installation near Nasdaq and financial institutions involved in the IPO process. Protest materials criticized Grok and warned investors about what organizers described as potential legal and regulatory risks connected to AI-generated content.
The protest arrives at a moment of heightened scrutiny for generative AI platforms. Organizers pointed to investigations, lawsuits, and broader concerns involving AI-generated sexualized imagery as justification for the public demonstration. Musk disputed the accusations, writing on X that the claims being promoted by protesters were “totally false.”

The timing may be as important as the message. SpaceX’s planned IPO is expected to be one of the largest public offerings in market history, making it a high-visibility target for advocacy groups hoping to influence public perception and investor decision-making.
The event also highlights a broader shift in AI activism. Rather than focusing exclusively on technology companies, activists increasingly direct pressure toward investors, banks, and institutions that provide capital and legitimacy to emerging AI businesses.
While WIRED reported that many pedestrians appeared indifferent or amused by the oversized display, the protest succeeded in generating significant media attention and social discussion. That combination of visual spectacle, a polarizing public figure, AI controversy, and financial stakes helped transform a local demonstration into a nationally distributed story.
