Elon Musk Faces Tesla Fan Revolt as Influencers Exit ‘Cult’ Community
Some of Tesla’s most visible online supporters are beginning to step away from the company’s once-dominant fan culture.
The shift comes as criticism grows around both the behavior of CEO Elon Musk and the future of the company’s self-driving technology.
For years, Tesla benefited from a powerful network of influencers and creators who promoted the brand across social media. According to reporting from WIRED, that community helped defend the company from critics and amplify Musk’s messaging.
Now some of those same voices say they are distancing themselves.
Several former Tesla advocates cited Musk’s increasingly political public persona and his takeover of Twitter in 2022 as major turning points for the online community.

Others point to frustration around Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system, which Musk has repeatedly predicted would achieve full autonomy “soon” for nearly a decade, even though the system still requires driver supervision today.
“It was kind of like a cult… and something changed over time,” one former Tesla community member told WIRED.
The backlash reflects a broader shift around Tesla’s brand.
Political protests targeting Musk and Tesla have appeared across the United States and Europe, with activists urging people to sell Tesla vehicles or divest from the company’s stock.

Research cited in reporting suggests Musk’s political involvement may have cost Tesla more than one million potential vehicle sales between 2022 and 2025, highlighting how closely the brand has become tied to its CEO’s public image.
For now, Tesla still maintains one of the largest and most active fan communities in the tech and auto world.
But the question facing the company is whether that loyalty can hold if the divide between Musk’s politics and Tesla’s original mission continues to widen.
