Elon Musk Posts Starlink ‘Antarctica’ Video — Community Notes Say It’s Patagonia
Elon Musk amplified a viral video on X this week claiming it was live-streamed from Antarctica using Starlink satellite internet, but the footage was not filmed there.
The mislabelled clip shows dramatic ice formations, and Musk reposted it to highlight Starlink’s ability to reach remote locations. The claim quickly drew attention because Musk’s tweet used his flagship Starlink brand to suggest the video was genuine evidence of service in Antarctica.
Within hours, X’s Community Notes feature added context saying the video was shot in Patagonia, a region in South America known for glaciers, and not at the South Pole. The uploader of the video is heard saying they are streaming from Patagonia in the footage itself.
That correction contradicted Musk’s original statement and introduced immediate confusion about what the video actually showed versus what was claimed for promotion. This isn’t the first time Musk has faced scrutiny over public statements on X, where fact checks and community context often follow rapidly after viral posts.

In a separate but widely circulated set of documents recently released by the U.S. Justice Department, emails between Musk and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein from 2012-2013 show discussions about potentially visiting Epstein’s private Caribbean island. Musk has said he did not attend the island and that he declined Epstein’s invitations but critics note the exchanges reveal outreach about social visits.
“This is false,” Musk wrote on X when asked about alleged island visits, maintaining he refused Epstein’s invites.
Misinformation on his own platform now intersects with historical scrutiny of his past correspondence, raising questions across political and tech communities about credibility and leadership. Reviewers say the mix-ups matter because public trust in tech CEOs affects consumer confidence and regulatory oversight.
Observers expect further analysis of both Starlink claims and Musk’s role in the Epstein file narratives as journalists and lawmakers dig deeper.
