Elon Musk Teases ‘Epic’ AI Video Tool as OpenAI Scraps Sora Platform
OpenAI’s sudden shutdown of its Sora video generator is already triggering a new AI arms race and Elon Musk is stepping directly into it.
Just hours after reports confirmed Sora’s closure, Musk said the next version of xAI’s Grok video generator “will be epic,” according to Forbes. The timing raises immediate questions about whether Grok is positioning itself to fill the gap Sora leaves behind.
According to Reuters and The Guardian, OpenAI pulled Sora after mounting pressure from deepfake misuse, copyright disputes, and high operating costs. The move also collapses a major Disney partnership tied to the platform.
But Grok comes with its own baggage. Previous reporting from The Guardian shows the tool faced backlash over explicit AI-generated images, forcing restrictions earlier this year.
That creates a new tension: OpenAI stepped back over safety and cost concerns, while Musk is signaling a more aggressive push forward.
What’s still unclear is whether Grok’s next version will solve the same problems—or scale them.
