Erika Kirk’s Viral “Grift” Gaffe at Turning Point USA Event Sparks Online Frenzy
Erika Kirk unintentionally used the word “grift” when saying “grit” during a public tribute and the moment quickly went viral. At AmericaFest, the annual Turning Point USA event in Phoenix on Dec. 20, Kirk was honoring a student named Caleb when she appeared to stumble over her words while referencing her late husband’s legacy.
The flub sparked immediate reaction online, with clips shared widely by accounts such as Shadow of Ezra. Video shows Kirk saying, “Despite the devastating loss of Charlie Kirk, my incredible husband … Caleb has persisted with the same grift, excuse me…” before correcting to “gift” and then to “grit.”
Charlie Kirk, 31, was fatally shot at Utah Valley University in September during a campus event tied to his American Comeback Tour; the suspect has been charged with aggravated murder and other counts.

The immediate tension online hinged on whether the slip was meaningful or simply a tongue-twist, with social posts using the term “Freudian slip” to criticize or mock. But attendees and video evidence show Kirk quickly acknowledged the mistake and continued her remarks with humor and focus on the student and the organization’s goals.
“It has been a long day,” she said to laughter after correcting herself.
The moment matters because it highlights how quickly small verbal miscues can be amplified in political circles, especially during emotionally charged speeches. It also underscores the intense social-media scrutiny surrounding Turning Point’s leadership in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s death.
Turning Point USA has not issued further comment on the clip beyond what was captured on video. What happens next will be whether the organization leans into or moves past the viral moment in its messaging and events.
