Mike Johnson’s Big Health Care Lie
At a press conference this week, House Speaker Mike Johnson looked straight into the camera and declared that Republicans are the ones “working around the clock every day to fix health care.” He said it wasn’t a talking point — it was fact.
Except it’s not. It’s a lie.
For years, Republicans have tried to repeal or gut the Affordable Care Act, slash Medicaid, and roll back protections for people with preexisting conditions. Johnson himself voted for the 2017 repeal effort and has pushed plans that would add work requirements to Medicaid — proposals that the Congressional Budget Office warned would cause millions to lose coverage.
Right now, as Americans face skyrocketing premiums and hospital closures, Johnson’s party is blocking an extension of the ACA’s premium tax credits. If those subsidies expire, millions of families will see their health care costs jump overnight. That’s not “fixing” health care — that’s breaking it.
And while Democrats fight to preserve subsidies and expand access, Johnson and his colleagues spend their energy spreading scare stories about immigrants getting free health care. The truth? Federal law bars undocumented immigrants from Medicaid and ACA coverage. Johnson knows this, but repeats the talking point anyway.
So when Johnson claims Republicans “care more” about health care, remember the record. Every major GOP health care push in recent years has meant fewer people covered, higher costs for working families, and more instability for the system. That’s not caring — that’s cruelty dressed up as compassion.
