FAA Orders Boeing 737 Max Inspections for Possible Cracks as Safety Scrutiny Widens
The Federal Aviation Administration has ordered inspections of 471 U.S.-registered Boeing 737 Max jets for possible cracks in a structural reinforcement near a forward service door, adding another layer of regulatory scrutiny to Boeing’s most closely watched aircraft family.
The directive applies to certain Boeing 737-8, 737-9 and 737-8200 models. The component at issue is the bear strap near the forward galley door cutout, an area tied to fuselage structure. Regulators are acting after similar cracking was found on older Boeing 737 models, even though Boeing says the issue has not been observed on the 737 Max fleet.
Boeing’s position is that the Max inspections are preventive. The company said it extended the checks because the Max shares a similar design and build process with the earlier 737 aircraft affected by the problem.
