FBI Director Kash Patel Challenges Senator to Alcohol Test During Heated Hearing
Kash Patel’s fight with The Atlantic just moved from court filings to a live Senate hearing.
During a tense budget hearing Tuesday, Sen. Chris Van Hollen pressed the FBI director over allegations of excessive drinking and unexplained absences first reported by The Atlantic. Patel forcefully denied the claims, calling them “categorically false” and challenging Van Hollen to take an alcohol-screening test alongside him.
The exchange immediately intensified an already expanding controversy.
Patel is suing The Atlantic and reporter Sarah Fitzpatrick for $250 million, arguing the publication knowingly pushed false claims. But the dispute has widened after Fitzpatrick recently said additional sources have continued contacting her to reaffirm parts of the reporting.

The hearing also revived scrutiny over Patel’s leadership, media battles, and alleged use of FBI resources tied to personal controversies.
What was once a media-versus-official dispute is now unfolding publicly before Congress — with both legal and political stakes rising at the same time.
