FBI Executes Search Warrants at LAUSD Headquarters, Superintendent’s Home
Federal agents served search warrants Wednesday morning at the Los Angeles Unified School District headquarters and at the San Pedro home of Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, confirming an ongoing federal investigation.
The action sent immediate shockwaves through the Los Angeles education community because the FBI has not disclosed reasons for the search warrants, and the underlying court affidavits are sealed, leaving officials and the public guessing about the nature of the probe.
According to authorities, FBI agents also searched a third property in Southwest Ranches, Florida, in what the bureau said is part of the same matter. The Los Angeles Unified School District, which educates more than 500,000 students as the nation’s second-largest public school system, said in a statement it is cooperating with investigators but provided no further detail.

Federal officials declined to comment on what they were searching for or whether Carvalho, who has led LAUSD since 2022, is the focus of the investigation. Some local reporting suggests sources familiar with the matter describe the inquiry as potentially white-collar or financial in nature, although no official confirmation has been offered.
“The FBI is serving judicially authorized warrants, but because affidavits are sealed, we have no comment,” an FBI spokesman said.
Carvalho, a former Miami-Dade schools chief with a history of education innovation and occasional controversy, has overseen tech contracts and partnerships, including a failed AI company investment that drew scrutiny.
The lack of specific allegations has left district leaders scrambling to reassure staff and families while federal agents continue their work. The sealed nature of the investigation means answers may not emerge for weeks, even as speculation grows about whether more legal actions will follow.
