Federal Agents Swarm Minneapolis High School After ICE Killing, Classes Canceled
MINNEAPOLIS — JAN. 7, 2026 — Minneapolis Public Schools canceled classes district-wide for the remainder of the week after federal immigration agents were reported operating near Roosevelt High School during student dismissal, just hours after a woman was fatally shot by an ICE agent several miles away.
According to school officials, union representatives, and witnesses, armed federal agents were seen near Roosevelt High School shortly after classes ended Wednesday. Multiple accounts describe a chaotic scene in which agents tackled individuals near school property, briefly detained two school staff members who were later released, and deployed chemical irritants. Some students sheltered in a nearby library as the situation unfolded.
The federal activity occurred approximately 2.5 miles from the earlier site where Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, was shot and killed during a large-scale immigration enforcement operation in south Minneapolis. The proximity and timing of the incidents heightened alarm among parents, teachers, and district officials.

The Department of Homeland Security has disputed parts of the school-related accounts, stating that agents were pursuing a suspect in the area and denying that officers entered school grounds or used excessive force. Those claims conflict with statements from educators and witnesses who say the federal presence disrupted dismissal and created an unsafe environment for students.
In response, Minneapolis Public Schools announced the cancellation of all classes on January 8 and 9 “out of an abundance of caution,” citing concerns for student and staff safety amid ongoing federal operations in the city.
The Roosevelt High School incident intensified public reaction already fueled by Good’s death earlier that day. Protests formed Wednesday night and continued Thursday near federal buildings in Minneapolis, with demonstrators calling for accountability, transparency, and the withdrawal of federal agents from residential areas and school zones.
State and local leaders have demanded clarity on both the shooting and the school incident, as investigations continue and tensions remain high across the city.
