Federal Homeland Security Agents Stream into Minneapolis for Massive Fraud Probe, Says Noem
Federal Homeland Security agents were in Minneapolis this week conducting what Secretary Kristi Noem called a “massive investigation on childcare and other rampant fraud,” according to a social media post she and Homeland Security officials shared.
The presence of HSI personnel and the surge of federal officers has raised tensions between state and federal agencies and put a spotlight on allegations of misuse of taxpayer funds tied to childcare and other social programs.
Noem posted video footage showing agents with Homeland Security Investigations questioning individuals at sites across the city, and FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau had “surged personnel and investigative resources to Minnesota to dismantle large-scale fraud schemes exploiting federal programs.”
The developments follow years of fraud cases in Minnesota, including a major pandemic-era scheme tied to a nonprofit that prosecutors labeled one of the largest of its kind. Some federal prosecutors now say a significant portion of federal funds supporting multiple programs in the state may have been misused, although those figures are disputed.

“No one should pilfer taxpayer dollars meant to support vulnerable families,” said a federal law enforcement spokesperson, underscoring the operation’s law-enforcement priority.
Federal officials are also reviewing a viral social media video that highlighted alleged fraud at daycare centers, prompting calls for greater documentation and auditing of childcare funding.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has said his administration is cooperating while defending state oversight efforts and noting existing fraud prosecutions. Federal investigators are preparing to expand inquiries and potentially pursue additional charges in the coming weeks. The situation continues to evolve as agents gather evidence in Minneapolis.
